Aamir Khan’s multi-starrer film ‘Lagaan’, which came in the year 2001, was a blockbuster hit. Made at a cost of just Rs 25 crore, the worldwide collection of this film was more than Rs 65 crore. There were many scenes in the film which the makers found difficult to film, but the biggest problem was the song, which was visualized, but no one had thought how to shoot it. After a lot of brainstorming, it was decided to get a huge curtain prepared, but when this also did not work, other options were also considered. So let’s know what is the story of the shooting of the film ‘Lagaan’.
This song from ‘Lagaan’ became a problem
Writer director Anil Mehta had told in an interview that when the song ‘Ghanan-Ghanan’ was to be shot, it had to be shown that a lot of clouds come and cover the cast. Now since Aamir Khan had thought of shooting this entire sequence in the afternoon, a big difficulty was to show the sudden darkness on the faces of the cast. That too in a way that suddenly starts happening when clouds cover the sky. But in those days, neither VFX were there nor could this work be done with the help of CGI.
The makers had to get a giant curtain stitched
So the makers had to find a way to make the work done and also make the scene look convincing. Anil Mehta said that after thinking for a long time, someone suggested that why not get a huge curtain stitched which when suddenly brought over the cast would show the light turning into darkness. The order to get this curtain stitched was given and a curtain of several hundred meters was stitched and brought to the set. But now the problem was that when this curtain was spread at such a height in an open field, it would fly away in the wind and take away everything with it.
Aamir Khan found an amazing solution
But somehow this sequence was shot to some extent and after this director Ashutosh Gowariker along with the choreographer decided that the dance sequence should be kept so long that after showing the shot of the clouds, the actors would be shown dancing and singing for a long time. Apart from this, Aamir Khan gave the solution of showing the entire cast under the thick clouds after the clouds cover and said that the shots after the clouds cover should be filmed in the evening after the sun sets and then by joining both the sequences it will look as if the characters are dancing happily after the clouds cover.
